Peg Allen ’50: Sustaining Swarthmore Through Gift Annuities
At Swarthmore Margaret “Peg” Allen met interesting people, had passionate conversations, and formed lifelong friendships. She fondly remembers playing on the women’s softball and badminton teams and joining friends for games of bridge. The personalized education she received at Swarthmore and her degree in political science provided a solid foundation for her future. At Penn Law School and in her career in corporate law at Pennsylvania Railroad and Bell Telephone (now Verizon), Peg broke through gender barriers and met with success. She believes that Swarthmore paved her way.
Sixty years after graduation, Peg still keeps in touch with classmates and gets together with her Swarthmore friends. She has attended every fifth-year reunion, often serving on the planning committees, and she helped to compile a yearbook for her class’s 50th reunion. In recognition of what Swarthmore has meant to her, Peg decided to contribute to the College with several charitable gift annuities. These annuities benefit both Peg and Swarthmore, providing her with an extra source of retirement income and the College with financial assistance for the future.
Peg’s generosity helps ensure that generations of students will receive the same valuable educational experience at Swarthmore that she did. “Anybody who gets into Swarthmore is lucky to be there,” says Peg. “I was.”
